If the artwork is built to the wrong spec, every envelope in the run carries the error. Bleed: What It Is and How to Set It

Bleed is the area of artwork that extends past the final trim line. When the printed sheet is die-cut into envelopes, mechanical tolerance means the cut can shift ±1 mm — without bleed, white edges appear on full-bleed designs.

Safe Margins: Protecting Critical Elements

The safe margin is the no-go zone for anything important. For envelopes, three zones deserve special care:

  1. General safe margin — 6 mm from all trim edges
  2. Address zone — keep the delivery-address area (lower-right third of the front) free of graphics; postal sorting machines must read it
  3. Flap areas — the front and back flaps fold and gum; artwork within 10 mm of the flap edge can distort at the crease
