Introduction

Google Docs can print an envelope, but not the way Microsoft Word can. There is no Envelopes dialog and no envelope page size. Tutorials that tell you to choose "Custom" in Page setup are describing a menu that does not exist. Docs still works if you treat the page as a sheet of paper and the envelope as something the printer feeds. This guide covers the setup that does exist, the template you build once, and the print settings that hold the address in place. Size values come from our number 10 envelope standards, not from numbers copied off a blog.

What Google Docs Actually Offers

I checked this in a live Docs session on 27 October 2026 rather than trusting memory.

FeatureAvailable in Google Docs? What to do instead

Envelope paper size in Page setupNoStandard page, envelope at the printer

The paper list is fixed and short: Letter, Tabloid, Legal, Statement, Executive, Folio, A3, A4, A5, B4, B5. There is no envelope entry and nowhere to type your own size. Page setup gives you orientation, page colour and four margins, and that is the whole toolbox.

Why the "Custom Size" Advice Fails

Several articles ranking for this keyword tell readers to switch the Docs page size to "Custom". That step does not exist.

ToolCustom page sizeEnvelope handling
Google DocsNoStandard page plus a fed envelope
Google SlidesYes, verified 2026-10-27Closest thing to a true envelope canvas
Microsoft WordVia the Envelopes dialogDedicated tool and mail merge

This is why the exact-size workaround below uses Slides. The Word route is covered in our Word envelope printing guide.

Setup A: Standard Page, Envelope at the Printer

The most reliable route for a desktop printer.

StepActionNote
1File > Page setupOrientation must match how the envelope feeds
2Pick a standard paper sizeLetter or A4 unless the envelope is large
3Set the margins for the address blockMargins are how you move text on the page
4Type the return address, then the delivery addressTwo blocks, not one paragraph
5Print on plain paper, hold it against the envelopeCheapest alignment check there is
6Print at 100% with the envelope loadedNever fit-to-page here

Margins carry the layout. If the address sits low or far right, change that margin instead of adding blank lines, because margins survive a reprint and blank lines do not. Fit-to-page is what turns the whole document into a shrunken page on the envelope, which is the complaint people post in Google's support forums. Keep the scale at 100% and let anything outside the envelope fall off the page.

Setup B: Exact-Size Canvas in Google Slides

When the envelope must be a specific size, Slides gives you the page size Docs refuses.

StepActionNote
1New blank presentationNo theme
2File > Page setup > CustomEnter the envelope width and height
3Add text boxes for both addressesNative in Slides, no Drawing detour
4Add a logo if neededPosition it exactly where it prints
5File > Download > PDFLocks the layout before printing
6Open the PDF and print at 100%Same scale rule

The PDF step matters. Slides reflows slightly between edit view and print view, while a PDF page stays fixed.

Building a Template You Reuse

Docs has no save-as-template for personal accounts and the gallery has no envelope entry. A master document plus File > Make a copy is how repeat senders work.

Template elementWhy it helps
One master doc per envelope sizeChanging margins between jobs causes mistakes
Return address as a single blockOne edit updates every copy
Drawing text box for the delivery addressDragging a box beats counting blank lines
Placeholder text in capitalsHard to miss before printing
Envelope size in the file nameStops an A7 layout going onto a number 10

For a printed layout rather than blank stock you feed yourself, our printable envelope templates cover the PDF side. The blank envelopes guide explains the stock a manual-feed workflow needs.

Print Settings That Decide the Result

SettingChooseWhy
Scale100% or Actual sizeFit-to-page squashes the page onto the envelope
Paper sizeThe envelope, if the driver lists itThe driver decides what the printer can feed
TrayManual feed or rear trayThe main cassette rarely takes envelopes
OrientationMatch how you load the envelopeA rotated envelope prints a rotated address
Page rangeOnly the page you needStops a blank second page
Print qualityNormal or draft on coated stockLess ink, less smudging

Paper size is a printer setting, not a Docs setting. Docs sends the page it has; the print dialog and the driver decide what happens on paper. If your printer lists no envelope size, Setup A is the fallback.

When the Address Comes Out Wrong

SymptomUsual causeFix
Whole document printed tiny onto the envelopeFit-to-pageSet scale to 100%
Address shifted sidewaysEnvelope loaded backwards or rotatedReprint on paper and compare
Text missing at the edgeAddress outside the printable areaIncrease the margin on that side
Jams at the flapThickness at the seamFeed one at a time through the manual tray
Self-seal flap sealed inside the printerLaser fuser heatTest one envelope or use an inkjet
A blank page prints after the envelopeEmpty final page in the documentPrint a page range

The plain-paper trick clears most of that list in one pass: print the layout on a sheet, hold the sheet and the envelope against a window, and you will see the offset before you spend an envelope.

Printing a Batch

Docs has no mail merge. Bulk printing needs a Workspace add-on or an Apps Script that builds one page per spreadsheet row.

StepWhat happens
1Addresses live in Google Sheets, one row per envelope
2A template document holds the layout and the merge fields
3The add-on or script generates one page per row
4Export as PDF, print in batches of ten or twenty
5Check the first few pages before printing the rest

Keep the sheet clean: one column per field, no merged cells, postal codes stored as plain text so leading zeros survive. On placement, one rule: the delivery address has to sit where your postal service expects it, and on a window envelope it has to line up with the window. Our address block guide covers the details.

When Google Docs Is the Wrong Tool

Docs is fine for a handful of envelopes and poor for a print run. A few hundred pieces, or an envelope printed in your brand colours, belongs with a converter. Our custom envelope production quotes from size, material, print and quantity.

Conclusion

The honest answer is that Docs gives you a page, the printer gives you an envelope, and your job is making the two line up. Set a standard page, move the address with margins or a drawing text box, print one plain-paper test, then print at 100% with the envelope loaded. Slides covers the exact-size case.
