What Is an X-Ray Envelope?

Un x-ray envelope — also called an x-ray film envelope o radiology envelope — is a light-proof paper jacket used to store, handle and transport exposed X-ray film. A standard mailing envelope doesn’t block light. An x-ray envelope does. Exposed radiographic film is ruined the moment ambient light reaches the emulsion, so the envelope is part of the imaging workflow itself.

The envelope has to block light, keep out dust and moisture, stop the film from curling, and carry printed identification fields so each film matches the right patient or test record. Every specification below follows from those requirements: the 450 g/m² paper weight, the corner data blocks.

X-Ray Envelope Size Standards

X-ray film comes in a small set of standard sizes, and the envelope must be larger than the film on every side so the film slides in without bending and stays fully covered. The international standard full-size film is 35 × 43 cm (14 × 17 inches), with each envelope edge carrying at least 3 cm of clearance.

Film SizeMetric EquivalentUso típicoEnvelope Clearance (each side)
14 × 17 in35 × 43 cmFull-size chest, spine and NDT weld radiographs≥ 3 cm
10 × 12 in25 × 30 cmExtremity, pediatric and small-area films≥ 3 cm
8 × 10 in18 × 24 cmSmall-format and dental-panoramic films≥ 2.5 cm

Two market conventions matter here. North American imaging departments usually order by imperial size (14 × 17, 10 × 12), while international and African buyers — including a recent bulk inquiry — specify the same film in metric as 35 × 43 cm. The sizing rule is identical either way: the interior dimension is the film size plus clearance, never the film size alone.

Paper Weight & Light-Proof Material

The stock is what matters most. The standard is 450 g/m² extra heavy duty interior kraft, roughly double the weight of a heavy commercial envelope. Light-proofing is a physical property: thinner stock lets ambient light bleed through the paper fibers and fog the film.

PropiedadEspecificaciónPor qué importa
Peso del papel450 g/m² extra heavy duty kraftBlocks ambient light through the paper fibers
TonoNatural or dyed kraft, opaqueDark stock adds opacity over white wove
Stack capacityUp to 0.7 cm of filmPrevents overstuffing and creasing
RigidezBoard-like stiffnessStops film from curling in storage

For non-imaging applications a 250–300 g/m² stock is sometimes acceptable, but any envelope that will hold exposed film should be built on 450 g/m² kraft. The interior (the side touching the film) must be smooth enough not to scratch the emulsion, and the whole envelope must hold a stack up to 0.7 cm thick without the flap gapping open and admitting light.

Identification Data Printing

Every x-ray envelope carries printed identification data spaces — blank fields the radiographer fills in so a film can never be confused with another patient’s. The standard layout places two data blocks on the front face: one in the upper-left corner and one in the upper-right.

Data BlockPosiciónTypical Fields
Patient / subject dataUpper leftName, ID number, facility, exam date
Examination dataUpper rightExam type, body part, projection, technologist
NDT data (industrial)Upper rightWeld number, component, operator, date

These blocks are usually printed as ruled lines or light-tint boxes rather than solid dark panels, so handwritten entries stay legible. For industrial NDT the same corners are repurposed for weld and component identification. A factory can print the fields as blank ruled blocks, as pre-set labels, or with a hospital or inspection company’s logo and header.

Certification: ISO, IEC and CE

X-ray envelopes for medical use are frequently ordered with certification requirements attached. The inquiry that drives this page — a bulk order for international supply — explicitly required ISO, IEC and CE documentation, and this is standard for any buyer supplying hospitals or exporting to regulated markets.

CertificaciónQué cubreWhy Buyers Ask for It
ISO 9001Quality management systemConsistent manufacturing and traceable QC
ISO 13485Medical device quality managementCompliance for medical-use packaging
CE markingEU conformity declarationLegal access to European markets
IEC (relevant standards)Electrotechnical / radiography safetyX-ray equipment and accessory compliance

Always ask the supplier to attach copies of these certificates to the quotation — never accept an uncertified claim. If your end market is a hospital or an EU-regulated buyer, confirm in writing which standards your order must meet before production starts.

Medical Radiology vs Industrial NDT

The same x-ray envelope serves two separate industries with different data fields and buying patterns. Knowing which line you are buying for changes the envelope’s printing and sizing.

The material is identical — 450 g/m² light-proof kraft — but a medical order typically adds ISO 13485 and patient data blocks, while an NDT order emphasizes field durability and weld identification. A factory experienced in both can run the same envelope with a different print plate.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is the standard size of an x-ray envelope?
The international standard full-size film is 35 × 43 cm (14 × 17 inches); smaller formats are 10 × 12 in (25 × 30 cm) and 8 × 10 in (18 × 24 cm). The envelope is sized at least 3 cm larger than the film on every side.

What paper weight should an x-ray envelope be?
450 g/m² extra heavy duty interior kraft is the standard for light-proofing. Lighter 250–300 g/m² stock leaks light and is only acceptable for non-imaging storage.

How does an x-ray envelope keep film light-proof?
Through a combination of 450 g/m² opaque kraft, dark-toned stock and a full-cover flap. The paper weight is the key spec — thin paper lets ambient light through the fibers.

Do x-ray envelopes need ISO or CE certification?
Yes, for hospital supply and export. Buyers routinely require ISO 9001 / ISO 13485 and CE documentation, and IEC standards apply on the equipment side. Request certificates with your quotation.

What is the MOQ for custom x-ray envelopes?
X-ray envelopes are a bulk product. A recent international inquiry specified 250 envelopes per pack across 280 packs — 70,000 pieces. We quote per order size, so solicita una cotización with your film size and quantity.

Can x-ray envelopes be used for industrial NDT films?
Yes. The same 450 g/m² light-proof kraft works for industrial radiography; only the printed data fields change, from patient information to weld and component identification.

Order Custom X-Ray Envelopes

An x-ray envelope is a specialist product. Thin stock, a missing data block, or an undersized clearance ruins exposed film and fails hospital audits. Our factory produces custom envelopes to the 450 g/m² standard, prints patient or NDT data fields to your layout, and manages the full la fabricación de sobres personalizados process including Acabados de impresión and certification documentation.
